What are Dental Bridges?

A dental bridge is used to fill the space between two healthy teeth when one or more teeth are missing. In the majority of situations, a dental crown is placed on each good tooth on either side of the gap to support the bridge in between. These teeth are referred to as anchor or abutment teeth. The bridge effectively forms a fake tooth, known as a pontic. The pontics can be composed of a variety of materials, including gold, alloys, porcelain, or a mix of these.

Types of Dental Bridges:

Dentists use various types of bridges depending on your dental health objectives. There are four main types of dental bridges:

  1. Traditional dental bridge: A traditional dental bridge consists of an artificial tooth or teeth that are held in place by dental crowns fixed to each abutment tooth. A classic bridge is the most common type of dental bridge, and it can be utilized when you have natural teeth on both sides of the gap left by your missing tooth.
  2. Cantilever dental bridge: A cantilever dental bridge’s pontic is kept in place by a dental crown glued to only one abutment tooth, unlike a regular bridge. For a cantilever bridge, only one natural tooth adjacent to the missing gap is required.
  3. Maryland dental bridge: Maryland dental bridges, like routine bridges, consist of two natural abutment teeth, one on each side of the gap. Unlike a standard bridge, which puts dental crowns on the abutment teeth, a Maryland bridge has a metal or porcelain framework attached to the backs of the abutment teeth.
  4. Implant-supported bridge: Implant-supported bridges, as the name implies, are made out of dental implants rather than crowns or frameworks. Typically, one implant is surgically implanted for each missing tooth, which holds the bridge in place. If one implant for each missing tooth is not feasible, the bridge may include a pontic settling between two implant-supported crowns.

A dentist will consider numerous criteria when considering which type of bridge you need, including:

  • Your age. (Typically, dentists do not place bridges in children.)
  • How many teeth are you missing?
  • The extent of the gap.
  • The condition of your teeth at the gap.
  • Whether you have natural teeth on each side of the gap.
  • The general health of your teeth and gums.
  • Your specific preferences.

Why is a Dental Bridge needed?

When you have one or more missing teeth, it might have a variety of consequences. A dental bridge can address changes, including:

  • Restore your smile.
  • Restoring the ability to chew properly.
  • Restore your speech and pronunciation.
  • Keeping the form of your face.
  • Readjusting your bite to correctly distribute the force when chewing.
  • Keeping your remaining teeth from shifting out of the proper position.

Advantages of Dental Bridges:

  • Offer a natural-looking tooth-loss solution.
  • Restore chewing and ability to speak (missing teeth make eating and speaking difficult).
  • Prevent nearby teeth from moving into the space left by lost teeth.

Disadvantages of Dental Bridges:

  • If decay or stress causes damage to your abutment teeth, your dental bridge may become weakened.
  • If your abutment teeth are not sufficiently strong to support the bridge, they may break.
  • Plaque and germs from the bridge and underlying gum tissue can cause gum inflammation or cavities if not properly cleaned.

Tips to care for Dental Bridges:

Caring for a dental bridge is similar to caring for your own teeth. To keep the bridge in good condition:

  • Brush and floss every day.
  • Use a non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste.
  • Every day, clean below your bridge with floss threaders or interproximal brushes (small brushes that fit between your teeth).
  • Avoid very hard or chewy foods.
  • Avoid chewing on ice, pens, pencils, and your fingernails.
  • Visit your dentist on a regular basis for checkups and cleanings.

Tooth decay or loss can have an impact on a person’s looks, ability to eat particular foods, and overall quality of life. Dental bridges help to restore one’s bite and smile. All dental prostheses have dangers and benefits. Before committing to any operation, consult with a dentist about all of these factors and solutions.
