What are Dentures?

When a person has missing teeth, he or she may encounter a number of issues. The individual may lose confidence in their grin and have difficulties speaking and eating specific meals. Dentures are custom-made appliances that replace missing teeth and restore lost appearance and oral functions.

The denture might be full or partial.

  • A full denture is used when all of a person’s teeth are lost.
  • A partial denture is used when only a portion of the teeth are missing.

How are dentures made?

It takes numerous steps to fabricate a denture:

  1. Making impressions of teeth.
  2. Creating a dental model.
  3. Adapting the prosthesis.
  4. The denture is being polished.

How do dentures clean?

Dentures require daily cleaning much like natural teeth, regardless of the type you may have. Dentures are prosthetic teeth, but bacteria, plaque, and tartar can still build up on them and harm the gums and natural teeth. Remove your dentures from your mouth and give them a quick rinse under cold water to remove any food particles that might be lodged under the structure, between the teeth, or along the gum line. Next, use a denture brush or very soft toothbrush to thoroughly clean the dentures using a denture cleaning or mild soap. Avoid using regular toothpaste, electric toothbrushes, and other cleaners as they are abrasive and can cause damage to the denture materials. Make sure to give them a thorough rinse after cleaning. Make sure to use a very soft, moist toothbrush and fluoridated toothpaste, if necessary, to clean your gums and any natural teeth while your dentures are out of your mouth. If your toothbrush is too hard, cover your entire gum area with a moist, soft washcloth as you gently massage your gums.

Benefits of dentures:

The benefits of dentures are:

  • better ability to chew.
  • improved look.
  • enhanced capacity for speech.
  • enhanced nutrients as a result of better chewing ability.

Cons of dentures:

There are several difficulties with dentures as well, particularly with traditional removable dentures. For example, a lot of people who wear traditional dentures lament that when they speak or chew, their appliances move, wobble, or fall out of place. Additionally, when teeth are lost, your jawbone gradually shrinks, which causes facial collapse (like sunken-in cheeks).

Your prosthodontist or dentist will advise you on how often to visit if you have dentures, although it’s generally recommended to go every six months. It’s critical to schedule routine dental appointments so that your teeth may be properly cleaned, oral problems like cancer can be detected, and your dentures and mouth can be evaluated to guarantee appropriate fit.

What are the different types of dentures?

There are several types of dentures available, including partial and full dentures. All require fitting to ensure that they match the form, size, and color of your teeth. A prosthodontist or a general dentist can fit dentures, and many of them do.

1. Removable Partial dentures

Removable Partial dentures are often used in place of other tooth replacement treatments when the surrounding natural teeth are not strong enough to support components such as dental bridges, or when more than one or two teeth are missing.

They are fitted to the area of the gum line where they will sit and fastened to neighboring natural teeth to keep them from falling out of position. They are not permanently fixed, but may be simply removed for cleaning or sleeping.

2. Complete dentures

Complete dentures, replace all of your natural teeth. They can be fitted for either the top or bottom gum line and are maintained in place by suction and/or an oral adhesive. They can be removed just as easy as partial dentures.

3. Immediate dentures

Immediate dentures are a type of full or partial denture that differs from traditional permanent dentures in that they are made before the teeth that will be replaced with dentures are extracted, and they are used immediately after tooth extraction and during the healing process, which can last up to six months. Immediate dentures can be refitted more easily than permanent dentures to accommodate mouth changes as the swell

4. Overdentures

Overdentures are an alternative that can be utilized if standard dentures are too unpleasant or if you still have a few natural teeth. Overdentures are placed over the roots of normal teeth and either rest on them or on dental implants if there are no natural teeth to fit over. Some people prefer this style of denture because it is more comfortable and easier to remove.

5. Implant-supported dentures

These dentures are supported by dental implants, as the name suggests. A dental implant is a permanent fixture that is cemented into the jawbone and can be used to replace any number of teeth. They are made up of an implant, a metal post (typically titanium), and a bespoke crown that appears just like a natural tooth. Implant-supported dentures can be attached in a variety of ways, but they must be cared for and maintained much like traditional dentures.
