What are veneers?

Smile is a universal language. Our smile is of utmost importance and dental aesthetics play a vital role creating it. Veneers are coverings that fit over your teeth's front surfaces. Technicians make them from high-quality dental materials like tooth-colored composite or porcelain. Dental veneers are cosmetic in nature. They may cover up a variety of cosmetic flaws, like chips, cracks, gaps, tooth discoloration, and more.

Indications for Dental Veneers:

Anyone who wishes to improve the appearance of their smile can consider veneers. These dental restorations may cover up:

  • Chipped or fractured teeth.
  • Diastema (gaps or spaces in the smile).
  • Stains that do not improve with tooth whitening.
  • Teeth that are small enough.
  • Misshapen teeth.
  • Poor restoration

It’s crucial to know that veneers are only an option if you don’t have any major cavities or gum disease. If you have major dental health issues, you should address them first before considering cosmetic treatments.

Contraindications for Dental Veneers:

  • Poor quality enamel or insufficient sound enamel.
  • Rotated or overlapped teeth or deep bite cases.
  • Broken down teeth.
  • Oral habits such as bruxism or rubbing foreign objects to teeth.
  • Patient with severe periodontal disease.
  • Teeth that are still actively erupting.

Veneers vs crowns: What’s the difference?

A porcelain veneer just covers the front surface of a tooth, enhancing its appearance. A dental crown, on the other hand, completely covers the tooth structure, providing strength and protection.

Dental veneers are a cosmetic procedure. In other words, they brighten your smile but do not necessarily strengthen or heal your teeth. While dental crowns can improve the appearance of your teeth, they are mostly used to treat teeth that have been severely damaged by disease or trauma.

There are different types of veneers?

Yes. Veneers are classified into four types: composite veneers, porcelain veneers, no-prep veneers, and removable veneers.

  • Composite veneers

Composite veneers can hide minor cosmetic flaws. To obtain the desired results, your dentist employs a tooth-colored composite resin, which is also utilized in dental veneers.

  • Porcelain veneers

Porcelain veneers can correct a variety of cosmetic flaws. These restorations are custom-made to fit your dental structure. Before placement, your dentist will need to remove some enamel from your natural teeth. This roughens your teeth’s surfaces, allowing your new veneers to stay in place.

  • No-prep veneers

No-prep or minimal-prep veneers are a less invasive alternative. No-prep veneers, like normal porcelain veneers, are designed to fit your specific smile. However, they require less enamel removal than standard veneers. It is crucial to note that no-prep veneers still require some enamel removal. No-prep veneers are not suitable for everyone. Ask your dentist if you are a candidate.

  • Removable veneers

Removable veneers, often known as pop-on veneers or snap-on veneers, cover your natural teeth to cover up flaws. Removable veneers, like retainers, can be removed whenever necessary. Removable veneers can improve your smile, but they make eating difficult and may impair your speech. There hasn’t been much research on removable veneers because they’ve just been around for a few years. Ask your dentist if this is a safe option for you.

Do dental veneers require special care?

To prevent porcelain veneers from being damaged, follow the instructions below:

  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Avoid toothpastes containing baking soda or other abrasives.
  • Avoid using astringent mouthwash.

What are the advantages of dental veneers?

Dental veneers provide a number of advantages, including

    • Natural and stable color with smooth lustrous faces.
    • Highly acceptable tensile bond strength.
    • Exceptional resistance to wear.
    • Resistance to stain.
    • Extremely good biocompatibility with gingival tissues.
    • Lack of radiopacity. It appears as a natural tooth structure on radiographs.

What are the disadvantages of veneers?

Veneers also come with certain disadvantages:

    • The loss of natural enamel.
    • Many veneers are not reversible.
    • Your teeth can become more sensitive to heat and cold.
    • A veneer could fall off or become dislodged.
    • Colour cannot be modified easily once bonded.
    • Level of difficulty of fabrication and placement, time involved and expense.
    • Lower reparability compared to composite veneers.
    • Susceptibility to pitting by certain topical fluoride treatments.
